Re: 3D Library Suggestions
I would like to let you know about my stereoscopic publications which may
be of interest for your 3D library:
“Scotland in 3D – A Victorian Virtual Reality Tour” ISBN
9781527225527 RRP £25
This book contains 220 fullsize antique stereoviews of Scotland and a
handful of modern ones, with a fold-out Loreo Lite viewer. It is 128 pages A4
landscape, full colour, high quality printed at twice normal photobook dpi. It
takes the reader on a tour of Scotland to the Victorian hotspots and the text
contains history and anecdote loosely related to the photos. It ends with a
section on the history of stereoscopy in Scotland with mini bios of several key
photographers such as GW Wilson and James Valentine, and a list of over 200
known Scottish stereophotographers. In December, the book was selected as one of
“The Scotsman” photographic books of the year. The latest edition of StereoWorld
magazine reviewed the book and that review can be read here https://scotlan3d.com/book-reviews/
The book is available at my website https://scotlan3d.com/p3db-publications/
but non-UK purchasers may be cheaper buying at “The Book Depository”, which
offers free worldwide shipping (I honestly do not know how they can do that, as
it costs me £16.10 to post to US).
“Chamonix Mont Blanc in 3D – A Tour through the Stereoscope” RRP
£25
This book is the same general layout as the Scotland book. 128 pages full
colour with over 200 antique stereoviews of the Chamonix Mont Blanc area and a
few modern views highlighting the impact of global warming on the glaciers. It
comes with a LoreoLite viewer. Chapters include alpinism, winter sports and a
tour round Mont Blanc. Featured photographers include William England, Auguste
Roslie Bisson, Tairraz, Savioz and Couttet.
The book is also available in French. In English the book is only available
through me at https://scotlan3d.com/p3db-publications/
Further information on the book can be found here, including a review by
the President of the Alpine Club, Victor Saunders https://3dalps.wordpress.com/for-sale/
In addition, I have 2 “catalogue raisonée” volumes available for collectors
of stereoscopic views. These are B&W print-on-demand, so of much lower print
quality and are intended as reference books for the specialist.
“George Washington Wilson Stereoviews – A Collector’s
Catalogue”
This 300 page tome includes all the known catalogue titles of Wilson’s
stereoscopic output with numbers up to 2556 based on known catalogues published
in 1856, 1863, 1871, 1873, 1877 and 1893. Over 1500 Wilson stereoviews and known
variants are reproduced at half actual size. The text provides an overview of
the styles and labels used by Wilson and a guide on how to identify early
work.
Please note that I am in the middle of a major update, Version 8 of this
catalogue, which will be updated on line by 1 June 2020.
If anyone is interested in just the catalogue numbers with no images then
this is available here https://stereoworld.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/GW-Wilson-list-final-by-Peter-Blair.pdf
“William England’s Tour of Switzerland – A Collector’s
Catalogue”
A
collector's catalogue of William England's Views of Switzerland, a series of 3D
stereoscopic photographs taken in the 1860s. Incorporates half actual dimension
black and white images of over 500 of England's stereo views, including all of
the first 300 images in the series. No known catalogue was published by England,
so this list is informed by a list by Tex Treadwell, updated by the author. Note
that a more expensive version of this catalogue in colour is also available.
Provides a concise biography, investigates William England's relationship with
the Alpine Club and analyses the various titles and formats
produced.
If
anyone is interested in just the known catalogue numbers with no images then
this is available here https://stereoworld.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/william-england-list-for-NSA.pdf
Thanks
– I hope that will be of interest!

Neil, thank you for sharing your list. I had forgotten I also own "Fazinierende Natur Dirdimensional" which is in over/under format. You didn't mention it ut "3D Australia An Awesome 3-Dimensional Experience" by Ken Duncan and Leo Meier and 3-D Friends has a lenticular of God's Marbles (Wauchope, Northern Territories, Australia) on the cover in addition to the parallel views within the book. The following book looks interesting. I wonder if anyone here owns it and can offer an opinion. I found it on www.stereoscopy.com der farbe leben 3D Abstract And Impressionist Paintings In Chromadepth, by Dorle Wolf. This beautiful coffee table book is a pleasing alternative viewing experience from that of stereo photography. At ISU Lindau, we were so impressed with Dorle's gallery of Chromadepth paintings. Her work is beautifully displayed in this143 page book. Printed in the German, includes poems and writings by Dorle Wolf. Chromadepth glasses included.

Thank you very much for this important effort to keep stereoscopy alive.
In current times, a virtual meeting it's a vey important way to keep 3D lovers in contact and a good opportunity for stereographers from other countries to attend to it and to enjoy from other 3D experiences. Nevertheless, at 4 AM in Spain, will be quite hard to participate. Are you planning to record it and to share it im some way ? Lluis

I don't currently own a Win 10 computer but I am interested to knowFirst thing I need to point out is that I have not used this feature myself. I work all day on Linux servers and I have Macs, so the only thing I need to do with my old Windows laptop is to run Windows. Also important to know -- right now only Linux command line programs are supported. But support for Linux GUI apps is on the horizon. https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/19/21263377/microsoft-windows-10-linux-gui-apps-gpu-acceleration-wsl-features Does it just run natively or must Linux also be installed and itFirst off, you have to install a Linux. You take your pick from a number of supported distributions. - Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - Ubuntu 18.04 LTS - openSUSE Leap 15.1 - SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP5 - SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 SP1 - Kali Linux - Debian GNU/Linux - Fedora Remix for WSL - Pengwin - Pengwin Enterprise - Alpine WSL It looks pretty easy to do: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10 As for the native/emulation question, Wikipedia says... "Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a compatibility layer for running Linux binary executables (in ELF format) natively on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019." That's what little I know about this new feature (and I really don't know that, having not done it myself). ...BC

The dependencies of new version [of STMANI] are easier to fulfillThat's good to hear. BTW Windows 10 users may not realize that Microsoft now supports running Linux under Windows. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10 This might be an interesting thing to explore for the more adventurous computer nerds in our group. I am thinking that there is a good chance I will be able to run STMANI under macOS, which itself is based on BSD Unix. I just don't know when I will have the time to tackle it. But nonetheless, it is always good to have some alternatives out there for the alignment of 3D digital images. ...BC

I reckon STMANI may be a little difficult to install, in part because it is a Linux program. Even for Linux experts it is not free of issues, as JackDesBwa can attest. I want to thank him for his helping comments, that allow me to improve this. Sure the old version had dependencies difficult to satisfy today. The dependencies of new version are easier to fulfill and actually they installed without problem on my system. On systems based on Ubuntu (except likely the newest one), it is a bit less straightforward but not hard (there is a naming convention different than other distributions that cause problems but can easily be fixed thanks to the notes in the installation guide). However, I am looking forward to the english manual to be able to use the program for real. If you remember my statement that "Anything can be aligned", STMANI3 is the program that I use to prove... at least some of the test cases:-) In the last days, I drew an illustration of this with voluntarily exaggerated divergence
(left/right and up/down) as well as a rotation of the cameras around the
optical axis. It was not motivated by this thread, but it might be an interesting addition to the topic: https://stereopix.net/photo:koUNdrW2kF/ JackDesBwa

I was wondering what other books (in or out of print) members may recommend as essential or desirable for the 3D library. Obviously there are a broad range of topics - Stereoviews, Stereoscopes, Film 3D Cameras, Viewmaster equipment and reels,Technique books for taking or mounting images, books with 3D views, and books of historical interest. My interest would be in books on technique, books with images for viewing (parallel or anaglyph) but responses need not be limited to those topics. Perhaps references on Holmes Stereoviews. So what books do you think are essential to a 3D library or have extraordinary or historically important images that a 3D enthusiast should own?

Following on from the thread recommending stereo themed books....
Re Peter Blair's book "Scotland in 3D - A Victorian Virtual Reality Tour". I can certainly recommend this wonderful book. Beautifully reproduced stereocards with fascinating background information on each card. A useful introduction to 3D chapter too which makes it an ideal gift for someone new to stereo photography. My issue came with a small Loreo like viewer, but to get the best out of the superb printing (especially if a gift) it would be worth adding an Owl viewer. I ordered the book direct from his website www.scotlan3d.com . (Note the missing "d". - or the inserted "3" depending on how you see it :-)
