With the exception of the Freevi Flight Deck Commander 3D tablet (and essentially identical Truly version) which can display glasses free 3d in either portrait or landscape orientation, most displays to show 3d will be landscape.  So would not placing text below the image limit the maximum vertical image size while the horizontal is probably not limited?

I agree. The images of most old stereo cards are touching each other to get the maximum possible image immersion in the viewer. The artwork at the sides was NOT intended to be viewed in stereo. Only descriptive text in horizontal was intended to be read in stereo.
